Hello, sweet friends!
As a self-proclaimed crunchy girl who cares deeply about ingredients and checks the Yuka app like it’s a part-time job, you might be surprised that I get my nails done monthly. What can I say? I am just a girl. Jokes aside, I believe in a low-tox/non-tox lifestyle, but don’t believe in an all-or-nothing or perfection approach when it comes to pursuing it. We shouldn’t strive for that in any area of our lives, but that’s besides the point 😉
I do love having my nails always done, it’s just one of those things that makes me feel put together and femine/pretty. And in an effort to make it as low tox as possible, I go to a certified green salon, get low toxic builder gel on my nails, and often wear a mask to prevent breathing in any fumes or powder. But truthfully, I don’t love the toll it has on my nails, the expense, and sitting for 2 hours while still potentially breathing in the nail salon fumes.
I am not shaming anyone for partaking in getting your nails done; clearly, I have and enjoyed it for many years and see no issue in utilizing it as some self-care. And I am sure I will go back at some point for an occasional mani. But what I want to ditch is the time commitment, the hefty expense, and the nail damage. So on Thursday, I am getting my builder gel taken off and starting my nail health journey. I do get my builder gel taken off each year to give my nails a break, but usually go back and start again after a few months. This time, I want to make a promise to myself and stick to it that I am not going to do that.
I will instead be learning to do my own nails and treat it as self-care right from my home. I won’t be going bare-nails lol that’s just not me, but I’m excited to get good at doing it myself. So I bought a kit from Manucurist, a French brand that specializes in non-toxic polishes, treatments, and even gel. I will be starting with treatments and then, when my nails are a bit stronger, will move to their other polishes!
Do you get your nails done, or are you a bare-nail girl? Let me know! I am excited to share this healthy nail girl era with you.
Talk to you soon,
M
